Iran hostages and Extraordinary Rendition

US President George W. Bush yesterday labelled Iran’s capture of 15 British navy personnel “inexcusable behaviour” and demanded their release.

Bush said “It’s inexcusable behaviour and I strongly support the Blair Government’s attempts to resolve this peacefully,” Mr Bush said of Iran’s capture of 14 men and one woman in what it says were Iranian waters.

He continued “The Iranians must give back the hostages. They are innocent. They did nothing wrong,” he said, adding that it was a “serious issue because the Iranians took these people out of Iraqi waters”.

Now, what about the men that the USA and British have been kidnapping from foreign lands over recent years? How can this situation with Iran be “inexcusable” and what the USA and Britain do, acceptable? There are countless stories of this hypocrisy everywhere, one recent example is when undercover CIA agents entered Rome, the capital of Italy, and simply kidnapped one of their nationals. Countless other stories of these illegal kidnappings around the world by the USA and Britain can be found here. 1 2 3 4 5

The hypocrisy of it all is quite spectacular! I am not condoning what Iran did but really, have we become that blind to behaviour of our governments?

There has been an outpour of rage because the Iranians dared to place a hijab over one of the female hostages…Well; she wasn’t wearing an orange jump suit and blinded was she? She or her fellow hostages were not shackled with chains on their ankles and wrists; a bible wasn’t spat on, stood on, urinated on and desecrated in front of them. They haven’t been beaten, stripped naked and had electrodes attached to their genitals. Any they will not be thrown into the back of plane and sent to some place in the middle of nowhere to be tortured.

I don’t think they have been forced to endure anything like what the prisoners of Belmarsh, Abu Ghraib Prison went through, let alone Guantanamo Bay.

Let us not forget what the Americans and the British governments have done and continue to do around the world to innocent people. And let us not think that the British and American governments care about human rights…because they don’t; they never have and they never will. History has a brilliant way of exposing reality…if only it would be examined.
