I was thinking this evening about our blessed and noble master, Rasulallah (saw) and the mercy he (saw) so embodied in every aspect of his being. I recalled a lesson of Bukhari taught to us by our teacher, Shaykh Abu Yusuf Riyadh ul Haq and how he described an incident involving a bedouin and his request for a du’a from the Noble Messenger (saw). We were covering the book of Jumu’a and our respected teacher described how our Master, Rasulallah (saw) would deliver his sermon. From memory, I narrate the following:
At the time of the incident I wish to briefly describe, Madina and the surrounding areas were suffering a great drought that affected everyone and everything for months and months. This drought had been causing great harm and suffering on the people of Madina as crops failed and their livelihoods were affected.
One Jumu’a, the Prophet (saw) was delivering his sermon to the faithful when in to the Masjid walked in a bedouin. Bedouins were generally rough and rugged, in their appearance and character, unlike the Sahabah (ra) who would sit so still in the presence of the Prophet (saw) that a bird could quite easily perch on their heads. The bedouin would not have the etiquettes of such gatherings and were known to talk straight and to the point and in this particular case one bedouin entered abruptly in into the Masjid of Rasulallah (saw). He gestured towards the beloved Prophet (saw) with his hands trying to get the attention of the Prophet (saw). He then said, in front of everyone, “oh Muhammad, there is a lack rain, my cattle and livelihood have been affected and I am suffering so please invoke your Lord and bless us with rain”
Our beloved Nabi (saw) smiled and looked at the sky where no clouds were detected. The mercy to mankind, Prophet Muhammad
(saw) raised his noble hands and began to invoke Allah
(swt) for the rain that was so needed. No sooner had the noble hands of Rasulallah (saw) had been raised clouds began to appear on the horizon. These clouds were not ordinary clouds; they were dark clouds and so vast that they covered the whole sky with such speed as to turn Madina into darkness. Even before the noble hands of our beloved Nabi (saw) dropped, the rain began to pour…and pour…and pour. Rain landed in every place in Madina and the surrounding areas and it rained and poured into all the valleys until they were filled and flowing with abundant water. All the lands were quenched and the people were very happy.
A week later and the rain was still pouring with the same intensity and again during the Friday sermon of Prophet Muhammad
(saw), the same man (in some narrations) entered and complained to Allah
’s Messenger (saw) about the amount of rain that was pouring upon them. He spoke to the Prophet (saw) and said “We are drowning, please invoke Allah
to withhold the rain from us” Our beloved Nabi (saw) again smiled at the bedouin and then, with his noble hands raised with his palms facing down and his noble arms stretched out, he said three times, “O Allah
! Let it rain around us but not upon us.” Before Rasulallah (saw) dropped his noble hands the rain began to stop and then he (saw) pointed with his finger at the sky. Wherever he pointed, the clouds in the sky would fold up like a scroll and disperse. He pointed left, right and over head, and each time the clouds were affected and folded and dispersed until no clouds were left over Madina and no rain fell over Madina.
Subhanallah! What a sight that must have been, what a miracle this was. Our beloved Master, Rasulallah (saw) was sent as a mercy to mankind and see how quick Allah
(swt) is keen to answer the du’a of his beloved (saw).
I love this story. May Allah
(swt) forgive me if I made any errors in narrating it to you.
