bsmlh E120: Haram Food Colouringmms E120: Haram Food Colouring

I have a habit of reading the ingredients of virtually all food that i eat, this can be very annoying to some people (well, my non Muslim family mostly)

Looking at ingredients has served me well over the years as i have been offered all kinds of things from cakes, chocolates, sweets to ready cooked meals and, in some cases i have found haram ingredients.

I learned something recently on a Radio 5 Live discussion about Vegetarianism and was surprised to find out that many of the E numbers in sweets contain animal products. I was about to dive into a packet of M&M’s last night, as i have in the past, and thought i would have a quick look at the ingredients, that is where i found E120.

dactybien E120: Haram Food ColouringE120 comes from the crush insect, Dactylopius which, as you can see, is a lovely looking cactus feeding scale beetle, that offers its red shell for us to dye our food.

I am sure many of you enjoy M&M’s as i did but knowing that you will be eating this beetle or many of these beetles in the process may change your mind.

The effect of eating haram unintentionally does has its spiritual effect, especially on your dua’s, so in order to safeguard ourselves we must stay away from this E Number and M&M’s

here is a list of E numbers from animal origin

but why is eating the beetle haram. Can’t we not eat insects, weird question but saying m&ms is haraam is pretty heavy. Maybe it may not suitable for vegetarians, but being not halaal?
    Looking forward to your reply.

    Asalamu alaikum Amal

    Taken from QA Sunnipath:

It is obvious that the number of animals that are permissible to eat is lengthy and cannot be enumerated in this answer, however, I can mention for you some criteria and examples by which the ruling may be known, as our imams mentioned. And if you have any problem with it after that, then please ask. So I say:

Animals are of three types: Land life, aquatic life which cannot live outside water, such if you were to take it out, it would die, and the third is that which lives on land and in water together.

As for the first group which is land animals, a few types are haram to eat:

First, it is impermissible to eat land animals that attack with their fangs among predatory animals, such as lions, wolves, dogs, cats, bears, monkeys, elephants, according to our imams. Also impermissible are those that attack with their claws, their nails that is, of birds such as the falcon, the eagle and others of that type.

Second, any animal that the Prophet, may Allah (SWT)?s peace and blessings be upon him, commanded to kill is haram to eat, such as the snake, the crow and the mouse.

Third, any filthy creature such as worms, ants, bees, flies and all insects, and those that have poison [s. are impermissible to eat].

Fourth, any animal whose impermissibility to eat which has been specifically established, such as the domestic donkey.

Fifth, an animal that is born of one parent that is permissible to eat and another that is not permissible to eat is haram to eat because the impermissibility overcomes it, such as a mule born of a horse and a domestic donkey.

Sixth, any animal that the Prophet, may Allah (SWT)?s peace and blessings be upon him, prohibited to kill such as frogs, is impermissible to eat.

The E-number E120 comes from the crush insect, Dactylopius as I mentioned in the post and therefore it is not permissible to eat it.

It was delicacy of the Arabs to eat locusts. They would cook and eat them. This continued during the time of the messenger of Allah (SWT). May the peace and blessings of Allah (SWT) be upon him. The wives of the messenger of Allah (SWT) would present them to each other as gifts. This is from the authentic narrations. If all insects are haraam to each why then did the Messenger of Allah (SWT) allow the eating of Locusts.
We need to be very careful about giving fatwah about halal and haraam. It is not as simple as a haraam substance being used. The scholars go into great detail about how ingredients are added, used and how their nature changes when added to make food. And how this can have a bearing on if food is halal or haraam.

    Aladdin Sweets are Haraam!!!!!!!!!!!

    ——————————————————————————–

These sweets under the brand name Aladdin are sold in these corner shops with a big Halal Sign on them are Haraam.

I was curious to find out that if they were halal, and when investigating it has been confirmed that Aladdin sweets are Haraam.

So brother & sisters avoid eating these sweets they are Haraam.

For your own information ring the number at the back of the packet and ask them where are the sweets manufactuered and are they sure that their is no contamination of pork gelatine during the production process, you will find your answers.

AsSalaamu `alaykum wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakaatuhu brother,

haraam and halaal is a sensitive issue, I agree, we don’t have to be careful about that, rather we, laymen, CANNOT state anything in this field by our ownselves.
As a matter of fact here the brother Hamza gave us a fatwa declared by a qualified scholar, while your proofs against it are mere speculations.

The locust is halaal and the RasuluLlah sallaLlahu `alayhi wa sallam declared it calling it by name, then the wide majority of `Ulema consider halaal the locust as an exception, while other insects are not.
As far as I know according to the Maliki madhaab all the other insects are halaal to eat, and this is the fatwah of that madhaab and I don’t dare to criticize it.
