“When Hadhrat Shah Sahib would come and sit next to me, my heart would feel the pressure of the greatness of his knowledge” (Millat-e-Islam ki Muhsin Shakhsiaat, p. 185).
Hadhrat Shah Sahib’s knowledge was of such a unique nature that it even impressed great Ulama like Hadhrat Thanvi. Maulana Habibur Rahman Azami would always refer to Allama Kashmiri as a mobile library.
Mufti Taqi Usmani writes:
“My respected father often said that Allah had blessed Hadhrat Shah Saheb with proficiency in all types of knowledge and skills” (Akabir Deoband Kia They?, p.44).
Hadhrat Shah Saheb was such that no Earthly power could distract him from his favorite endeavor and lifelong engagement: reading and researching. After reading accounts of his life from those who were around him, it seems that he spend majority of his life reading books and extracting knowledge from them as if he had nothing else to do. However, he was not only a teacher of Hadith sciences at Darul Uloom Deoband, but the Head of all Teachers (Sadr al-Mudarris as called in Urdu); he has authored numerous books, he actively participated in the Khatme Nubuwwat Movement, served the Islamic cause in politics by his official position at Jamiatul Ulama-e-Hind and raised a family of which his two sons, Maulana Anzar Shah Kashmiri and Maulana Azhar Shah Kashmiri, are well-know for following the footsteps of their distinguished father.
Despite all these engagements, he was always found by his students in front of a book. He would never touch a book without Wudhu (Ablution) and would always sit respectfully in front of religious books. Allama Kashmiri had high respect for knowledge and books, the sources of knowledge. If a book has notes on its sides, he would move himself to read the side notes rather than moving the book. What great respect he had for divine knowledge! As a result of this tremendous reverence for religious books, Allah favored him with a matchless knowledge and unparalleled understanding.
Here Shaykh Abu Yusuf Riyadh ul Haq speaks about the many other virtues of this amazing scholar. A must listen!
Ibn Kathir quoted in his tafsir of Ayat 5:54 of the Glorious Qur’an, a saying of Abu Dharr (ra) who said:
“My Khalil (intimate friend, the Messenger) has commanded me to do seven deeds.
He commanded me to love the poor and to be close to them.
He commanded me to look at those who are less than me and not those who are above me.
He commanded me to keep the relations of the womb, even if they cut it.
He commanded me not to ask anyone for anything,
to say the truth even if it was bitter,
and to not fear the blame of anyone for the sake of Allah .
He commanded me to often repeat, `La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (There is no strength or power except from Allah )’, for these words are from a treasure under the Throne (of Allah ).”
This is taken from the new blog by Imam Anwar Al Awlaki. After i subscribed to the blog I received this email and thought, subhanallah! Inshallah, after reading this you may be encouraged to subscribe also.
Assalamu alaykum all,
In this set of short blogs I will review the books that I had a chance to read while I was in jail. Here is the first:
This was during my first two months in the Political Security Jail. This was a time when I was allowed no visitors, no contact with family, and no contact with other prisoners. In fact I wasn’t even allowed to speak to the prison guards except in whispers and only for urgent needs. This was a time of complete isolation from the outside world.
I was in an underground solitary cell made up of four concrete walls with an iron gate on one side and on the opposite side a small window -rather a hole- covered with iron mesh to allow for some fresh air to come in. I couldn’t see much from it because it was about four meters high. Then there was the roof with a bulb hanging from it which was on continuously day and night. Then the floor with a mattress 2-3 inches thick, a blanket, a worn off pillow, a plastic plate, a bottle for water, and an empty bottle “just in case”.
And then there was a Quran…
In this environment there is nothing to do and nothing to read but the Quran, and that is when the Quran reveals it secrets. When the hearts are clean; when there is nothing clouding the spirit, the Quran literally overwhelms the heart.
I have never in my life felt the Quran so strongly. Thoughts, insights and feelings that I would fail to describe would come with every new verse that I would recite. Reading Quran then was not something I would force upon myself but I would recite it with eagerness for hours at end and never lose my concentration. The chapters of the Quran would carry me outside of this world and I would completely forget about my situation until a warden would slam the door open for restroom time or to take me for interrogation. Then I would wake up again to the depressing reality of this world.
So does the Quran speak to us differently in jail?
We approach Quran with a more receptive heart when we are being tested. We also come to understand Quran better when we are separated from the distractions of this world. Both these two elements exist in prison. One thing I came to realize is that the Quran does not open up its secrets to you unless you open up your heart to it. Quran does not spill its pearls to the undeserving.
Ibn Taymiyyah wrote while he was in jail that he had been reciting Quran and reflecting on its meanings and that Allah has opened up the meanings of Quran for him. He said he learned new meanings that scholars would wish to learn. He had learned from it meanings he had never thought of before and he went further to state that he regretted the time he spent in the past learning other aspects of knowledge and not focusing on the Book of Allah . Within a short period he said that he had read the Quran, from cover to cover, eighty times. This was due to the blessings of him being imprisoned. Allah says: “You might dislike a thing and in it Allah puts a lot of good”
During that blessed period of over two months when I was free of any distractions except for the interrogation worries, that is when I came to understand the statement of Uthman (r) when he said: “If the hearts are pure they would never satisfy their thirst from the Book of Allah ”
Those moments are so strange to me now, and so different that they do not seem to be a reality, or even a far away memory, but rather seem to be a dream.
We ask you O Allah to make us of those who love your words and contemplate them.
“Indeed in that (i.e. Quran) is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is present (in mind)” Sura Qaaf 37.
‘If you want izzah and nasr you have to support Rasulallah sallahu alaihi wasallam. Supporting our beloved Prophet Muhammad is the key to our success as an ummah because he is the cause of the deen. There is every reason for us to love rasulallah salallahu alaihi wasallam, just see the favours he extends to us and all of humanity. If you don’t see these reasons, then love him because Allah loves him.
Prophet Muhammad says in one hadith on the authority of Anas ibn malik ‘Love Allah for what He provides you of His Bounties and love me because Allah loves me.’ If you don’t see any virtue in RasulAllah, you don’t read his seerah, you don’t read his life, you don’t know his character, you don’t know his miracles, his knowledge, his beauty, you don’t see the bounty that Allah has extended to you because of him, even if you don’t know anything else, love him because Allah loves him.
You have to submit to rasulallah salallahu alaihi wasallams sunnah, you have to submit to his commands, total submission to rasulallah salallahu alaihi wasallam.
A sahaba asked our beloved Prophet Muhammad ‘By my father and my mother, can I write everything you say, even when you’re angry?’ our beloved Prophet Muhammad replied, ‘By Allah , write everything. Write everything I utter, by Allah nothing comes from this tongue but the truth’. This is why he is perfect and we have to love him. He is the tissue of our life, he is our intercessor on the Day of Judgement, he is the door through which we access al Jannah.
Loving our beloved Prophet Muhammad knows no limits.
Thabit al bunani, a student of Anas ibn malik, he accompanied Anas for over 30 years. He said to Anas ‘I want to kiss your eyes, because with those eyes you saw Rasulallah salallahu alaihi wasallam
Pious people’s conditions and state of passing away
by Hadhrat Shaykh Maulana Yusuf Motala Saheb
A saint says that ‘if Shahadat (bearing witness) is on the door of the house and Islam on the door to the room and I was to die then I would prefer the death upon Shahadat. He was asked: why? He replied ‘because I do not know what would happen in the time it takes to reach the door to the room from the front door and then the Tawheed may be affected.’
Zohair bin Naeem Albaani is the narrator. He states my biggest worry is not my sins. Greater than the worry of my sins is another grief, and that grief is that Tawheed may be taken from me, and the fear of dying in a state other than Tawheed.
Ibne Mubarak narrates from Abu Luhaiya who narrates from Abubakr bin Sawaada he says that ‘A person used to live separately from the people, wherever he went he lived alone. Hazrat Abu Darda went to him and said ‘I give you Allah ’s oath. Tell me why you have chosen to live separately from the people.’ He said ‘I am fearful that my Deen (religion) is taken away from me and I do not even realise.’ Hazrat Abu Darda stated that ‘Do you see even one hundred people amongst the tribe who have this fear you have?’ and he continued to ask until he reached ten. The narrator states that I mentioned this to a Syrian and he replied: ‘this is the story of Sharahbeel bin Simat who is the companion of the Prophet may Allah send peace and blessing upon him. Hazrat Abu Darda used to say on oath: ‘the person who is not afraid of losing his faith at the time of death has lost his faith (Iman).’
One of our scholars has said ‘whoever has been given Tawheed he has been given everything. And whoever is deprived from Tawheed, is deprived from everything (blessing).
And the earth hath He appointed for His creatures
Wherein are fruit and sheathed palm trees,
Husked grain and scented herb.
Which is it of these favors of your Lord
that ye deny? Qur’an 55:10-13

Taken from the book: Pious people’s Conditions and State of Passing Away. By Hadhrat Shaykh Maulana Yousuf Matola Saheb
Whatever bad a person does in his lifetime appears before him at the time of his death and in the final instance of his life he sees that badness. At this conjunction if his Nafs (self) pulls him towards it and his heart concentrates on this evil then this will be counted as his last deed, regardless of how small it is and his ending will be classed as upon this.
And whoever had done a good deed he will remember it again at the time of his death and he will see it. Now if his heart remains steadfast on it and he likes it and he concentrates towards it then this will be classed as his final act/deed and this will be his good ending.
An old man, probably some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the park bench. He didn’t move, just sat with his head down staring at his hands. When I sat down beside him he didn’t acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if he was ok.
Finally, not really wanting to disturb him but wanting to check on him at the same time, I asked him if he was ok. He raised his head and looked at me and smiled. Yes, I’m fine, thank you for asking, he said in a clear strong voice. I didn’t mean to disturb you …..but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were ok I explained to him. Have you ever looked at your hands he asked. I mean really looked at your hands? I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point he was making.
Then he smiled and related this story: Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life. They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child my mother taught me to hold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They dried the tears of my children and caressed the love of my life. They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. They wrote the letters home and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse. Yet, they were strong and sure when I dug my friend out of a foxhole and lifted a plow off of my best friends foot. They have held children, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn’t understand. They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to open in prayer. These hands are the mark of where I’ve been and the ruggedness of my life. But more importantly it will be these hands that will receive, The Book of deeds. I look, ponder and pray that MY RIGHT HAND is blessed the fortune of receiving the trials of this life ie. MY BOOK OF DEEDS with this RIGHT HAND.
No doubt I will never look at my hands the same again. I never saw the old man again after I left the park that day but I will never forget him and the words he spoke. When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and wife I think of the man in the park.
I, too, want to RECEIVE MY BOOK OF DEEDS WITH MY RIGHT HAND—-I am trying to be worthy of it by preparing for it now……..
O MY PERFECT AND GENEROUS Allah ! I make shukr for these hands.
Hadhrat Haatimasam (R.A.) was a famous saint and noble student of Hadhrat Shaqeeq Balkhi (R.A.).Once his Shaykh Shaqeeq (R.A.) inquired from him, ‘Haatim, how long have you been with me?’
‘Thirty three years’, replied Haatim (R.A.); the Shaykh then inquired,
‘How much have you learnt from me in this period?’Haatim (R.A.) replied, ‘I have learnt eight Masaa’il (Islamic rules).’
‘Inanaa, LillaahiWa Innaailaihi Raajioon. My life has been wasted on you.’ Haatim (R.A.) replied, ‘Sir, I have learnt eight Mas’alaas (Islamic rules) only.I cannot tell you a lie.Hadhrat Shaqeeq (R.A.) said,
‘Tell what are these Mas’alaas?’Haatim (R.A.) replied: 1. ‘I have seen everyone loves something or another - His wife, his children, his wealth, his friends, e.t.c,but I have seen that when a person is lowered into the grave, then all the objects of his love are separated from him. Therefore, I started loving good deeds in-stead, so that when I am lowered into my grave, my beloved will accompany me, and not be separated from me even after death.’Hadhrat Shaqeeq (R.A.) said, ‘ You have done well.’
2. ‘I have read the words of Allah ’s in the Holy Qur’an.The Holy Qur’an states, ‘And as for him who fears to stand before his Lord (for the account) and restrained (held back) himself from low desires, verily the Garden (Jannat) that will be his home.’ (Chapt. 79 :Vr. 40-41 Q)I believe in the truth of Allah ’s words and therefore stopped my nafs (love of ones self) from desires, so much so, that it became steadfast in the obedience of Allah .
3. I have seen that whosoever loves and values a thing of this world, keeps it safely.I have read the words of Allah ..The Holy Qur’an says: ‘That which is with you passes away and that which is with Allah is lasting.’(Chapt. 16 Vr. 96 Q)Because of this verse anything of value that reached me I advanced it to Allah , so that it could be secured forever.
4. Viewing the world I have seen some people, turning towards their wealth as a manner of honour and greatness, others turning towards lineage (parentage) yet others do things that become a source of vanity and pride. In the view of the words of Allah the Holy Qur’an says:‘Verily the noblest amongst you in the sight ofAllah is the one who is the most mindful of his duties.’(Chapt. 49 :Vr. 13 Q)I became mindful of the commands of Allah so that I may be honoured in his sight.
5. I have seen people taunting (insulting), finding fault and abusing each other. This is motivated (started) by jealousy which they have for one another. The Holy Qur’an says:‘It’s we who have apportioned (divided) among them their livelihood in the life ofthe world and we have raised some of them over others in rank, so that some of them may take others in service.’(Chapt. 43. Vr. 32 Q)‘If all the people are of equal rank then why will one not work and why should one be employed. This will upset the order of the world.’Due to this verse I have left jealousy.I became independent of the entire creation.I became aware of the fact that the distribution of provision lies solely in the control of Allah Ta’aalaa. He gives any amount to whomsoever he wishes, therefore I had left animosity (envy).I have understood that man’s prosperity is not relative solely to his effort, instead it is a gift from the Master of the universe, hence I do not get angry.
6. I have observed that practically everyone has quarrels and harbors enmity.Having pondered, I saw that Allah has commanded in the verse. The Holy Qur’an says, ‘Surely, the Satan is your enemy, so treat him as an enemy. (Do not make him your friend).’(Chapt. 35 Vr. 6Q)Thus, I have chosen him as my enemy I try my best to stay away from him, because Allah ’s declared him as an enemy.
7. I have seen everyone striving for their daily bread, due to this they disgrace themselves in front of others and take unlawful things. Then I read the verse of Allah ’s: ‘And there is no moving creatures on earth but its sustenance dependant on Allah .’(Chapt.11 Vr. 6 Q)I saw that I am also amongst those walking on the earth whose provision is the responsibility of Allah .I have utilised my time in those activities which Allah has ordained, and gained time by not undertaking the responsibility of Allah .
8. I have seen the people depending on the creation, some on their properties others on their business, whereas others depend on their health and their strength. These people in spite of being part of the creation yet show total dependence on the creation.I have read the verse of Allah:‘And whosoever trusts in Allah , He is sufficient for him.’(Chapt. 65 Vr. 3 Q)Thus, I have put my reliance and confidence in Allah .‘I have found that all kinds of good actions fall within these eight masaa’il, therefore whoever practices these masaa’il has put into practice the contents of all four divine scriptures,’ said Hadhrat Shaqeeq (R.A
