As morning dawns upon me, I bear testimony before You and before the angels who carry Your Throne and all Your angels and all of Your creation that truly, You are Allah , there is no god but You, The One and Only God without any partner, and that truly, Muhammad is Your special devotee and Your Prophetic Messenger.

Allahumma inni asbahtu ush-hiduka. . .

Abu Daud narrated that Anas bin Malik said that the Prophet (pbuh) said:

“When one says, Allahumma inni asbahtu ushhiduka, wa ushhidu hamamalata ‘arshika… (until the end of the dua), Allah will free a quarter of him from the fire, and if he recites it twice Allah will free half of him, and if he recites it three times Allah will free three quarters of him, and if he recites it four times [Allah will] free him from the fire.”

The White Days [al-ayyâm al-bîd] or “the white ones” [al-bîd] is an abbreviated way of referring to “the days of the white nights” [ayyâm al-layâli-l bîd], which correspond to the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth of every lunar month.

This term came into being as the said nights are brightly illuminated by the moon, which is then at or near full visibility. In his work entitled Adab al-Katib, the lexicologist and grammarian Ibn Qutaiba (d. ca. 270 AH) states:

The Arabs call them “the white days” [al-ayyâm al-bîd] because their nights are brightly illuminated by the moon, which is visible (in the clear desert sky) from the beginning to the end of each night.

Fasting Three Days Every Month

From amongst the meritorious voluntary fasts is fasting three days each month. Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) has narrated:

“My dearly beloved friend, the Messenger of Allah (upon him be blessings and peace), bequeathed me three practices that I shall not fail to perform, until I meet him again (at the resurrection), namely: (1) fasting three days out of every month, (2) performing the night-time prayer called witr, before going to sleep, and (3) the forenoon prayer [salatu-d duha].” — Al-Bukhari (1178) and Muslim (721)

Imam Al-Nasa’i (may Allah elevate his status) reports the following in his collection:

“The Messenger of Allah (upon him be blessings and peace) said: ‘Shall I not tell you of something that will take away the evil of the heart? (It is) fasting three days of each month.’” — Al-Nasa’i (2386)

Sayydina-sh shaikh Muhyiddin ‘Abdul Qadir al-Jilani (may Allah illuminate his resting abode) quotes in his Al-Ghunya li-Talibi Tariq al-Haqq the following two narrations:

* On the authority of Sayyiduna Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him), Allah ’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) once said:

“If a person has fasted on three days out of every month, he has been fasting all year long [sama-d dahr]”

* From ash-Sha’bi (may Allah bestow his mercy upon him):

“I heard Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be well pleased with him and his father) say: ‘I heard the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) say: “If someone fasts three days out of every month, performs the two cycles of the dawn prayer, and does not omit the night-time prayer called witr, regardless of whether he is on a journey or at home, Allah will credit him with the reward of a martyr [shahid]“

Fasting “The White Days” Every Month

In addition to the above-mentioned general Prophetic narrations [ahadith] about fasting three days every month, there are other narrations that single out “the white days” in particular for voluntary fasting.

Sayyiduna Jarir b. ‘Abdu-Llah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Allah ’s Messenger (upon him be blessings and peace) once said:

“Fasting three days of each month, namely, the thirteenth, the fourteenth, and the fifteenth, is equivalent to fasting all year long [siyam ad-dahr].” – Al-Nasa’i (2420)

Note: The truth and reality of this statement and the earlier one from Sayyiduna Jarir is confirmed by Allah (eminent is His Glory) in his revealed verse “If someone produces a good deed, he shall have ten just like it (to his credit).” [6:161]

Imam Al-Tirmidhi (may Allah elevate his status) reports the following in his collection:

“Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (Allah be pleased with him) said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (upon him be blessings and peace) said to me: ‘If you fast any part of the month, then fast the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.’” – Al-Tirmidhi (761)

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) is reported as having said:

“Allah ’s Messenger (upon him be blessings and peace) never failed to fast during ‘the white days’ [al-ayyâm al-bîd], regardless of whether he was on a journey or at home.”

Sayydina-sh shaikh Muhyiddin ‘Abdul Qadir al-Jilani (may illuminate his resting abode) states in his Al-Ghunya li-Talibi Tariq al-Haqq the following two athar that should raise the aspiration [himma] of every believing man and woman.

* Shaikh Abu Nasr (Muhammad b. Al-Banna’) has informed us, on good traditional authority, that the following saying can be traced back to ‘Ali b. Al-Husain b. ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him, his father and grandfather):

“To fast on the thirteenth of the month, is equivalent in value to fasting for three thousand years. To fast on the fourteenth of the month, is equivalent in value to fasting for ten thousand years. To fast on the fifteenth of the month, is equivalent in value to fasting for one hundred thousand and thirteen years.”

* Transmitted by ‘Abdu-l Malik b. Harun b. ‘Antara, on the authority of his father, Harun, who told ‘Abdu-l Malik that his grandfather, ‘Antara, had said:

“I once heard ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him and ennoble his countenance) say: ‘I came to Allah ’s messenger (upon him be blessings and peace) one day, around the time of noon, while he was indoors in his room.

I saluted him with the greeting of peace, and he returned my salutation, then he (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “O Ali, here is Jibril, offering you the greeting of peace!” So I said: “Peace be unto you, and also unto him, O Messenger of Allah !”

‘Antara then went on to say:

He (Allah bless him and give him peace) then said: “Come over here beside me,” so I moved till I was close beside him, whereupon he (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “O ‘Ali, Jibril is talking to you.

He is saying: ‘You must fast 3 days out of every month. For the first day, the reward of ten thousand years will be recorded in your favour; for the second day, the reward of thirty thousand years; and for the third day, the reward of three hundred thousand years.’”

I sought clarification: “O Messenger of Allah , is this reward for me in particular, or is it for all mankind in general?”

He (Allah bless him and give him peace) replied: “O ‘Ali, Allah will bestow this reward not only upon you, but also upon those who come after you, provided they perform the same good works as you do.”

I sought clarification: “O Messenger of Allah , which days of the month are the three referring to?”

He (Allah bless him and give him peace) replied: “They are the three known as “the white days” [al-ayyâm al-bîd]; that is to say the thirteenth, the fourteenth, and the fifteenth of the month.”

Antara then went on to say:

“So I said to ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him and ennoble his countenance): ‘Why do you call these the white days?’ ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him and ennoble his countenance) then told me the following story:

‘When Allah (eminent is His Glory) evicted Adam (peace be upon him) from the Garden of Paradise, and sent him down to the earth, he was so scorched by the sun that his body turned black as pitch. Jibril (peace be upon him) then came to him and said: “O Adam, would you like to have your skin turn white?”Adam said yes, he would like that very much. So Jibril said to him: “In that case, you must fast on the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth of the month.” Adam (peace be upon him) accepted the challenge, and began by fasting on the first of these days. As soon as he had done so, one third of this body turned white. Then he fasted on the second day, and found that two thirds of his body had now turned white. Then he fasted on the third day, after which the whole of his body had turned white. This explains why they are called “the white days” [al-ayyâm al-bîd].’”

The White Days and Crime

Full moon days have been traditionally associated with a myriad of effects on human behaviour. It has led to the rise of a theory known as the “Lunar Effect” or “Transylvanian hypothesis”. Critics and sceptics dismiss it as “pseudo-scientific” as they find claims of a correlation of lunar phases to human behaviour as exaggerated or simply not holding up under scientific scrutiny.

Nevertheless, it is interesting to note that some of the ardent proponents of this theory are from highly regarded professions. These include policing authorities and medical professionals who witness first-hand the “Lunar Effect” in the course of their jobs. In an article entitled, “Full Moon and Crime” [click to open], Thakur and Sharma wrote:

The incidence of crimes committed on full moon days was much higher than on all other days, new moon days, and seventh days after the full moon and new moon … The increased incidence of crimes on full moon days may be due to “human tidal waves” caused by the gravitational pull of the moon.

— Thakur, C P and Sharma, D. (1984). Full Moon and Crime. British Medical Journal. 289, p1789-1791.

Regardless of which side one takes in the “Lunar Effect” debate, it is worthwhile for Muslims to reflect on it. In a subtle way, this debate should strengthen one’s conviction that every sunna of the beloved Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) has a hidden wisdom and a higher reality.

For those of us who believe in the “Lunar Effect” theory, it behoves us to assiduously embrace the practice of fasting during the “White Days”. It is the ideal way to keep in restraint the passionate desires [hawa] and the lunatic-self [nafs].

Similarly, for the sceptics and critics, the mere possibility of the theory being true (as it has not been decisively rubbished) should encourage them to observe the fasts during the “White Days” with renewed vigour.

And Allah and His Messenger know best.

At the Question and Answer session of Red Sulfur tazkiya lesson 7 (May 9), a couple of beneficial questions were raised regarding trials and tribulations to which Sayyidi Habib Umar (may Allah preserve him and spread his benefit among us) responded with the following Prophetic prescriptions:

1. One should read:

“Ya Latif” 129 times in the morning and evening. Increase the number to 133 in times of difficulty.

(Al-Latif is one of Allah ’s names and is sometimes translated as “gentle” or “subtle.” Habib Kadhim as-Saqqaf (may Allah preserve him) said it encompasses all the names of Allah which express His beauty. By reading this name morning and evening one will be constantly in the realm of Allah ’s care and gentleness. The meaning of “lutf” is Allah bringing benefit and deflecting harm from an individual in a manner that that individual is unaware of).

2. In times of great distress, Ibn `Abbas narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to say:

La ilaha ill-Allah ul-`Azimul-Halim, la ilaha ill-Allahu rabbu’l`arshi-l’`azim, la ilaha ill-Allahu rabbu`ssamawati wa rabbu’l-ardi wa rabbu’l`arshi-l-karim

“There is no god but Allah , the Awesome, the Forbearing, there is no god but Allah , the Lord of the mighty throne, there is no god but Allah the Lord of the heavens and the earth and the noble throne.”

Repeat this until the distress is removed.

Given to me by a dear brother

Al-I’tiraf is a poem of supplication uttered by a slave of Allah by the name of Abu Nawaz. Outwardly, he was a naive jester whose antics drew much laughter from gathered crowds. Inwardly though, he was a sincere and God-fearing believer who was ever-mindful of his tryst with destiny. It was this side of him that penned Al-I’tiraf in the following circumstances:

Once, he was sitting by himself watching the sun set. The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful. The serene blue sky was rent asunder by the dazzling colours spewed by the waltzing rays of the setting sun. As the tremendous beauty of nature’s dance made way for the still darkness of the impending night, tears began rolling down his cheeks.

He felt his heart being pulled apart and his senses becoming spiritually impaired. He became so distressed and filled with sorrow that he started wailing. With a flurry of emotions running wild, coupled with an unintelligible mix of cries and sighs, all knots on his tongue were untied. He raised his hands towards the Heavens and lamented about his state of being. Those powerful words came to be known as Al-I’tiraf

This grief-stricken lament was uttered by a hopeful and fearful heart that was remorseful for a lifetime of heedlessness. Abu Nawaz realized that he was getting older and that his time to meet his Creator was drawing nearer. He was completely terrified about his lack of preparation for this Meeting with his Lord in the Hereafter.

He acknowledges his sinfulness, for which he admits that he does not deserve the Gardens of Paradise. He then recognizes his weakness to withstand the frightening Hellfire. He concedes that he is but a feeble servant who has no power over his looming fate, except through Allah ’s Mercy brought about by entering the gates of repentance and attaining His forgiveness.

Behold! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day,- there are indeed Signs for men of understanding, – men who celebrate the praises of Allah , standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (with the thought): “Our Lord! not for naught hast Thou created (all) this! Glory to Thee! Give us salvation from the chastisement of the Fire. (3:190-191)

After the above verse was revealed, the Messenger of Allah got up in the middle of the night to pray. When Bilal ibn Rabah came to seek permission to call for the dawn prayers, he saw the Messenger of Allah crying with his beard soaked with tears.

So he asked, “Do you still cry, O Messenger of Allah , when Allah has wiped away all your past and future wrongdoings?” The Messenger of Allah replied, “Should I then not be a thankful slave! Allah has descended on me this verse (3:191). Woe to him who reads it without pondering over it.”

Seldom do we reflect on the Signs of Allah . In the setting sun, Abu Nawaz found a metaphor of life. The beauty that adorns the horizon when the sun is setting is an intoxicating one. If one loses oneself to that fleeting moment forgetting to light the lamp, he will be ill-prepared for the imminent darkness of the night.

Similarly, if one gets deluded and hypnotized by the enticements and frivolous pleasures of this ephemeral world, then damned will be that wretched soul in the Hereafter. How ludicrous for one on a journey to Eternity to find satisfaction and comfort at a transit point called Earth?

Success and guidance is from Allah alone, eminent is His Glory. Choicest salutations, immaculate peace, and infinite blessings be upon the Paragon of creation, his blessed family, noble companions, intimate inheritors, and all who have an atom of love for him in their hearts. Glory be to Allah , Lord of the Worlds.

Below is a specific dua (Ruqyah) (protective and healing supplications) which has been given by the Ulema from Daarul Uloom, Bury (one of the most prestigious Madaaris in the UK). It is an antidote for all illnesses and is particularly apt in this time, due to the spread of Swine Flu.

Some people maybe apprehensive to the method presecribed and might suggest that where is the evidence from the hadith etc… However, although specific prescription may not be mentioned in a hadith, it a formula prescribed by the learned scholars who are the inheritors of the prophets and they would not prescribe anything which is against the Shariah. So the dua is valid as long as it does not contain any shirk (association with Allah ).

InshaAllah the cure and protection is from Allah , and this prescription is just a means to that cure.

(note: when blowing ensure that some saliva goes into the water or honey)

Prayer for protection and cure from all illnesses The same prayer applies for Muslims and Non-Muslims; Allah will inshallah (God willing ) cure/protect them from illnesses including swine flu – Ameen

Procedure

The procedure below should be followed precisely and then one should blow on a glass of water and drink it or blow on a tablespoon of honey and lick it .

Danish brother Said Bak of Bakistan fame (follow him on twitter) informed me this morning of a Swedish convert who has ijazah in the Chishti order of Tasawwuf. Shaykh Mohammad Muslim Eneborg’s silsila includes our tariqa’s grand Shaykh, Hadrat Aqdas Shaykhul Hadith Muhammad Zakariyya (ra) himself.

Brother Said also mentioned that Shaykh Muhammad Muslim was an Imam here in the UK for a while some years ago so I am sure some of you may have heard of him. I haven’t which is why i’m getting all exited

Here is a quick bio from EducationIslam.org

Shaykh Mohammad Muslim is of Swedish origin but has lived in the UK since 1982 He converted to Islam in 1980 when he was living in the deep forests of northern Sweden. Presently he works as an Imam and Administrator at one of the local Mosques in London. He also teaches Arabic and Islamic Studies.

Shaykh Mohammad has been active in Inter-Faith dialogue and has been involved in Faith Forums working particularly with Jewish and Christian communities. He has lectured on Islam in Universities and other institutes and has regularly been invited by Schools and Churches to give lectures on Islam. He has also delivered Islamic Seminars at Mosques on behalf of Schools and other similar institutions. He is the chairman of “Sidratul-Muntaha” an organisation specifically set up to present Islam to the Non-Muslim community in Sweden.

Shaykh Mohammad has previously worked as an Imam in various Mosques in the UK and in Sweden. He has studied Islamic Theology at several Islamic Institutes and hence within the Muslim community is known as an “Alim” or Islamic Scholar. He has also studied Arabic at the University of Uppsala in Sweden.

Shaykh Mohammad has travelled extensively in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North Africa visiting Muslim communities and has developed good knowledge of the various cultures. He is married with 4 children.

Shaykh Mohammad has joined the team at Education Islam to deliver the Introduction to Islam and the Muslim Culture course to Non-Muslim professionals in the Public and Private sectors

My Allah protect him
